Race Update: Nice-Cannes Marathon
13-11-2016 Nice-Cannes Marathon, more than 14 000 runners came together to test themselves on a beautiful course, with a challenging finish. This year we ran on a modified course, as less than a year ago, the sea front of Nice was the scene of a terrorist attack. No events are allowed on the famous "Promenade des Anglais" for one year.
The 13-11-2016 was also the one year anniversary of another terrorist attack, this one happened in Paris. We particularly enjoyed the fact that the traditional one minute of silence was replaced by one minute of applause. A great positive approach to dealing with horrific memories.
This year we had a Hungry Runner team lined up, ready to share a great adventure as a group. Michael and Cliff chasing a personal best (both 60+yo), Saskia and I following and supporting as much as possible.
The 8am start was quite cold, but the MC was great and got us warmed up with good music and a few dance moves! Perfect conditions, beautiful blue sky and no wind, the French Riviera at it's best. The start was a bit chaotic with such a crowd, but it all got under control after a few kilometres. We managed to stick to the plan and follow a 5:00km pace.
After 28km we hit the first hill, followed buy some undulating terrain until the 37 km mark.
Michael and Cliff experienced very different races. Michael started to feel the effort during the undulating terrains, Cliff got very stiff after 37km.
What made this day great was to see that both managed to stay focused and push further than they have ever done. In running, it is often the hardship that makes for great victories.
We all finished in 03:35:33, Michael and Cliff ranking 30th and 31st of their age group. Great results and great ranking.
Thank you for sharing this great run, now it is time to recover!
